Walter Birr, 62, of Fairhope, PA, died on September 8, 2013. He was born in McKeesport on January 9, 1951 and is the son of the late Donald and Violet Elwell Birr.
Walter was a self-employed roofer which included work on the Striffler Family Funeral Homes and he also worked for various construction firms. He was a member and Past Commander of the White Oak American Legion, Post # 701 and a member of the 33rd District. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during Vietnam where he was a recipient of the bronze star. He was a member of the First of the Ninth Calvary, Cobra Helicopter Crew Chief of the 545th Military Police Company in Fort Hood, TX. His hobbies included fishing, boating, camping and being with his friends.
He is survived by children; Chris (Rachel) Birr of White Oak, Michelle (Jim) Herrmann of McCandless Twp., stepmother, Barbara Birr of Erie, grandchildren; Jessica, Tyler and Logan, siblings; Carol Birr of North Huntingdon, Donny (Iris) Birr of Monroeville, Bobby (Beverly) Birr of McKeesport, stepsisters; Virginia (Steve) Marchetti of McKeesport, Judy (Skip) Veshinfsky of Erie and Cathy (Randy) St. Dennys of New York and companion; Pam Schall of Fairhope with whom he resided.
Friends and family will gather on Friday at 2:00 pm until 6:00 pm at Strifflers of White Oak Cremation & Mortuary Services, 1100 Lincoln Way, White Oak, 15131, (Sue Striffler Galaski, supervisor, 412 678 6177). The White Oak American Legion, Post #701, will conduct military services in the funeral home chapel at 6:00 pm followed by services with Rev. Charles Owston.
