Rachel Delores Nelson

Rachel Delores Nelson, of McKeesport, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, July 2, 2015. Born May 12, 1926 in Washington, D.C., she was the fourth of five children of the late Dennis and Marialyce Graham Mack. After moving to McKeesport, she married James W. Nelson, who preceded her in death in 1978. Rachel was a former long time member of McKeesport's Zion Baptist Church and its Usher Board and the Fannie M. Howard Nurses Guild. She later became a charter member of New Birth Baptist Church in Duquesne and served as the Financial Secretary. A resident of McKeesport for over 60 years, she retired from Allegheny County in 1991. She was also a member of the Henry C. Williams American Legion Post.

To cherish her memory, she leaves behind sons, James (Carol) of Pittsburgh, PA and William of Richmond, TX; daughter, Delores of Reston, VA; a brother, Dennis (Barbara) Mack of Hyattsville, MD; sister, Gladys Coley of Columbus, MS; eight grandchildren; ten great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Her brother, Charles, and sister, Rita, preceded her in death.

Rachel will be remembered by friends and family for her love of life, her curiosity and humor, the way she spoke her mind, and her generosity. Friends may visit with the family on Thursday, July 9th from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Hunter-Edmundson-Striffler Funeral Home, 600 Market St., McKeesport, PA. 15132 (412-678-6191). A Home Going and Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, July 10th at 11:00 a.m. at New Birth Baptist Church, 406 W.Grant Avenue, Duquesne, PA. Remembrances may be made to New Birth Baptist Church in her name.
