Martin "Red" G. Downes

Martin “Red” G. Downes, age 94, of McKeesport, PA, died on Friday, March 13, 2026. He was born in McKeesport, PA on January 5, 1932, and was the son of the late Martin J. and Anna M. Gunning Downes. Martin was known as an excellent fast pitch softball player. He proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in engineering and after his military service he was employed by the family roofing business. Martin was a member of Mary, Mother of God Parish, St. Angela Merici Church. His faith was of the utmost importance to him, therefore he attended Mass daily.

Martin is survived by his cousin, Patrick Shriane of Port Vue, PA; along with many other cousins; nieces; nephews; great-nieces; and great-nephews.

In addition to his parents, Martin was preceded in death by his siblings, John G. “Jack” Downes; William Downes; Dennis Downes; and Mary Ann McQuillen.

Family and friends are invited to gather and honor Martin’s memory on Thursday, March 26, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at Strifflers of White Oak Cremation and Mortuary Services, Inc., 1100 Lincoln Way, White Oak, PA 15131 (Sue Striffler Galaski, supervisor, 412-678-6177). A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at Noon, at Mary, Mother of God Parish, St. Angela Merici Church, 2701 Kelly Street, White Oak, PA 15131. A burial with military honors will take place at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, 1158 Morgan Road, Bridgeville, PA 15017.
