John J. "Jack" Sowerby, 89, of McKeesport, PA, formerly of White Oak, PA died April 17, 2013. He was born in McKeesport on March 24, 1924, and is the son of the late Joseph and Margaret Moffit Sowerby. He is survived by his niece; Mary Lou (Jack) Selent, of Amherst, OH, nephews; James (Maureen) Sowerby of N. Huntingdon, Richard (Carrie) Sowerby of Orange, CT, Thomas (Theresa) Sowerby of State College, PA, niece-in-law; Donna Sowerby of Glassport, numerous great nieces and nephews, and great-great nephews. He is preceded in death by sisters; Margaret and Rose Sowerby, brothers; James and Robert Sowerby, nephew; Joseph Sowerby and sister-in-law; Louise Sowerby.
John was an agent with the IRS and the U. S. Dept. of Labor as a Compliance Officer and also a former auditor for County of Allegheny. He was a charter member of St. Angela Merici and a former volunteer with Meals on Wheels of McKeesport. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus #955 of McKeesport and the American Legion Post #361 McKeesport. He was a WWII Veteran of the U.S. Army and received the Good Conduct Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars.
Friends will be received at Strifflers of White Oak Cremation & Mortuary Services, 1100 Lincoln Way, White Oak, 15131 (Sue Striffler Galaski, supervisor, 412-678-6177) on Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. Mass Monday at 10:00 AM at St. Angela Merici with Very Rev. Stephen M. Chervenak officiating. Burial will follow.
Remembrances may be made to St. Angela Merici Church Building Fund, 1640 Fawcett Ave., White Oak, PA 15131.
