Joan M. Smith, age 90, of White Oak, PA, passed away on Friday, April 3, 2026. She was born in McKeesport, PA on June 28, 1935 and was the daughter of the late Frank and Mary Sharik Smith. Joan obtained her bachelor’s degree in education from Slippery Rock University and later was employed as a teacher at the former Lincoln School in White Oak, PA for many years. She was a member of the East Suburban Friendship Club; Parent Teacher Association; Pennsylvania State Education Association; and the McKeesport College Club.

She is survived by her sister, Sandra (Leonard) Mackowiak of Randolph, NJ; sister-in-law, Diane Sendek Smith of White Oak, PA; and many cousins.

In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her brother, Ronald D. Smith, who died on July 10, 2025; and her beloved cat, Penny.

Family and friends are invited to gather and honor Joan’s memory on Thursday, April 9, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until Noon at Strifflers of White Oak Cremation and Mortuary Services, Inc., 1100 Lincoln Way, White Oak, PA 15131 (Sue Striffler Galaski, supervisor, 412-678-6177). A burial will follow at McKeesport and Versailles Cemetery.

Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made in Joan’s name to Sable Kennel, 1681 5th Avenue, McKeesport, PA 15132, or to your favorite animal shelter.
