Bertha Ann Stevens, 92, passed away September 16, 2013 in the hospice of Redstone Highlands in Greensburg, Pennsylvania.
Bertha was born in Glassport, Pennsylvania to Andrew and Anna Simko Ogurchak on September 20, 1920. On April 14, 1941 she married John Edward (Jack) Stevens of McKeesport. After John's discharge from the Navy in 1945 they raised two sons, John Edward and Robert Joseph. She was a member of St. Cecilia parish in Glassport and later a member of St. Pius V parish in McKeesport where she was a long time member of the Confraternity of Christian Mothers. During World War II she was employed as a 5-inch naval projectile inspector at Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp. She was retired employee of McKeesport Hospital.
Bertha was preceded in death by husbands John E. Stevens on October 19, 1968 and Stanley Smolnicki on December 25, 1988; her parents, Andrew and Anna; five brothers Andrew, John, Joseph, Frank and William Ogurchak; and sisters Margaret Nasta and Amelia Merrill.
Bertha is survived by sons John E. of State College, PA and Robert J. (Michelle) of Potomac, MD; granddaughter Kristin Stevens (Jeremy) Kullman of Watertown, MA; grandsons John and Brian Stevens of Washington, DC; and great grandsons Benjamin and Caleb Kullman of Watertown, MA.
The family wishes to extend its gratitude to Redstone Highlands of North Huntingdon for over six years' of loving care and attention and to Heartlands Hospice and Redstone Highlands of Greensburg for gently comforting and supporting her during her final days.
Graveside services were held Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2013. Arrangements were entrusted to Strifflers of White Oak Cremation & Mortuary Service, 1100 Lincoln Way, White Oak, 15131 (Sue Striffler Galaski, supervisor, 412 678 6177).
Remembrances may be made to the Redstone Highlands, 6 Garden Center Drive, Greensburg, PA 15601-1397.
