Bernard J. McGowan, Judge of the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County (retired), age 82, of McKeesport, died February 20, 2012.

Beloved husband of the late Mary Aileen Truitt and loving father of Kevin, Brian, and David and grandchildren Kaitlynn and Brendan; daughters-in-law, Darlene (Daugherty) and Cassandre (Paquette).

He was a graduate of the McKeesport High School, class of 1947. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1951, and went on to earn his J.D. at the University's law school in 1954.

He served three years in the United States Marine Corps receiving an honorable discharge as First Lieutenant. He served as State Judge Advocate and State Commander in the AMVETS Organization.

He practiced law in McKeesport from 1958 to 1975, during which time he also served as solicitor for the Allegheny County Coroner's Office. In 1976, he was elected to the Court of Common Pleas. He presided in the Criminal, Civil and Orphan's Court Divisions. While in the Civil Division, he served as Calendar Control Judge for the court. He retired from the Civil Division in 1999 and continued to serve as a senior judge in the Orphan's Court until 2004.

Friends will be received at Strifflers of White Oak Cremation & Mortuary Services, 1100 Lincoln Way, White Oak, 15131 (Sue Striffler Galaski, supervisor, 412 678 6177) on Thurs. and Fri. 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00. Blessing service on Sat. at 10:00 AM in the funeral home chapel with Fr. Stephen Kresak. Interment will follow in Round Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Simmons Center for Interstitial Lung Disease by making checks payable to the "University of Pittsburgh Simmons Center ILD", 3459 Fifth Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15213.
